Asking the right questions is one of the most critical Business Analyst skills to master.

It’s critical to ask the right questions so you can elicit the right information to progress in your analysis.

I believe it’s crucial to be intentional about planning your questions.

This may seem counterintuitive because you don’t know what the answers will be, but that’s ok.

The point isn’t to pre-empt what the stakeholder will say in response to your questions.

It’s about ensuring you leave the meeting with the information you really need to move forward in your analysis.

In this discussion, I’m sharing with you why it’s important to be intentional about the questions you’ll ask.

Here are the 5 questions you should be asking stakeholders as a Business Analyst and why I think they’re important.

  1. Why? – understand the spirit of the requirements
  2. For whom? – understand the main stakeholders who will be the recipient of the value
  3. What are we not doing? – understand what’s not in scope or what changes we’re avoiding to make
  4. How often? – understand the frequency of the issue and the size of the problem
  5. Have I understood you correctly? – validate in real time that you’ve understood the problem/solution

Listen to the episode to learn more about these.

Question 3 is inspired by the Free Requirements Checklist from Bridging The Gap, where it has a ton of questions that will help you ensure you’re asking the right questions.
